Why choose red cedar for an outdoor spa or sauna?

Red Cedar wood Used Spa Jacuzzi

All our wooden spas and saunas are made from red cedar. This choice is essentially due to the fact that this type of wood offers many qualities, including unique species, dimensional stability and ease of maintenance. Here are some details on why it’s preferable to use red cedar when creating outdoor saunas and spas.

Fragrance, one of the main qualities of red cedar

Red cedar is a wood that is systematically used during the design of a wooden outdoor sauna or spa from Atelier Nordic, as it has unique and inimitable essences that are released by heat. These wood fragrances, which appeal to many, are most often reminiscent of essential oils.

Dimensional stability

Apart from its subtle fragrance, red cedar is also renowned for its excellent dimensional stability. It also shows no shrinkage during drying. Another advantage of this wood is that it does not warp or warp when subjected to high heat.

When red cedar is used to build an outdoor sauna, its underside always remains dry despite wide variations in humidity. The dimensional stability of red cedar also means that the wooden outdoor sauna or jacuzzi spa quickly regains its watertightness, even when the bath is filled after having been empty for a long time.

Red cedar, a maintenance-free material

One of the main advantages of red cedar is that it requires very little maintenance. Treatments with woodstains or oils, which are recommended for most woods, have no real effect on the durability of this type of wood.

They should not be applied to red cedar, unless you wish to maintain its new shine with a special oil. This would be a purely aesthetic treatment, which we do not recommend.
For best visual results, it’s best to let red cedar age naturally. Over time, it will take on a beautiful silvery-gray color.
